The Right Seeds, the Right Timing

In California, we are experiencing a heatwave while it is officially still winter. It feels like August: blue skies, a scorching sun, and temperatures well above 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 Celsius).

From winter to summer… let’s get back to spring soon, my favorite season of the year. The days become longer, flowers start to grow, and we spend more time outside. It is also the time when I plant new flowers and herbs in our garden. I love to see how quickly things grow and how you can enjoy them for months to come.

While I normally only start thinking about planting sometime in April, the predicted heat made me start much earlier.

As a matter of fact, many things that apply to gardening also apply to business.

1. Prepare the right conditions

If you want herbs to grow, you need to get the basics right: good soil, the right seeds, and choosing the optimal place in the garden.

In business, it is the same. If you want to grow your business or enter a new market, make sure you start from a strong foundation. Know your strengths and improve where necessary.

2. Timing matters

In gardening, you choose the right time to plant your seeds and move plants outside. Every phase has its timing and optimal conditions.

In business, timing is just as important. If you launch a new initiative, think about the right moment to prepare, launch, follow up, and see the results. When are your customers available and open to new ideas? When do they have time to follow up?

See it as a process, not as a one-time event. There is a before and an after.

3. Stay flexible

The heatwave made me speed things up, as it made sense to plant earlier.

In business, it should be the same. To stay in the agriculture theme, make sure your strategy is organic. Be very clear about your goal and direction, but adjust your strategy as new opportunities or challenges arise.
