Chasing Everything and Catching Nothing

Updated: Aug 21

There’s a new puppy in the family!

Unfortunately not in California, but at my brother’s home. We’re spending the summer months in Belgium and having a blast watching how Kastar is stealing the show with his adorable face and unstoppable energy. Not sure if dogs can smile, but he definitely puts one on ours!

Kastar is young and curious, chasing everything all at once: birds, cats, leaves, shadows, and any toys we toss around. He goes all in, zigzagging at full speed, tail wagging, until eventually he gives up and flops down next to us, having caught absolutely nothing.

It’s adorable. And also, strangely familiar. Isn’t that exactly what happens in business when we try to chase every opportunity?

We see too many opportunities, get too many ideas, and try to apply a pile of well-meant tips and advice. The temptation to go after everything is real – but the result often looks a lot like the puppy: exhausted, empty- handed, and wondering “Why am I working so hard and still not seeing real results?”

Growing a business, especially across borders, is exciting. But without a clear direction and well defined priorities, we end up spinning our wheels.

"Growth isn’t about doing more. It is about doing less, better."

Here is how to refocus

Start with one clear goal

If you don’t know your destination, it is impossible to define the best way to get there.

Define 3 to 5 priorities

Define what matters most, based on your internal reality and the external environment

Work in quarterly sprints

Long enough to get things done. Short enough to keep momentum and focus

Dare to say NO

Every “yes” to a distraction is a “no” to your core priorities. Stay focused on what matters.

If your strategy is overwhelming, it is time to simplify. Let’s have a conversation if you want to clarify, sharpen your focus, and make sure you get real results.

But for now – time to go play with the puppy!
